Sarah Key's 'Back to Healthy'
Back-in-a-Week Program
at The Fernleigh Academy, Scone.
Future dates for 2010 are:
Monday 13th September to Friday 17th September
Monday 15th November to Friday 19th November
At my country retreat in rural New South Wales, you are treated as one of my own private guests surrounded by the grandeur of the Australian landscape [see Fernleigh Photo Gallery at the top of this page]. The Academy itself works like a gleaming tiny hospital that you just happen upon as you round the last bend, locked away in the tawny wilderness.
The programs, both in Australia and the UK, incorporate complete immersion in treatment and information and allow you to get back control of your health -- and your life. The method removes you from your current life for a few days. It gives you the perfect opportunity to see things clearly and wrest yourself free, as you begin to understand what it takes to be fixed.
At the end -- and it does come to an end! -- you have relief from pain of course, but you also have the knowledge and the strategies to go forward, with you in charge. We groom you and cosset you in the lap of luxury for a week, and then we deliver you back yo your previous life. Patients often comment the Back-in-a-Weeks mark a fundamental point.
The days of the Back-In-A-Week are intensive but the routine becomes familiar as you settle in. During the program you learn why a spine goes wrong [and then becomes painful] and what needs to be done to put it right. The information talks -- such as how to sit, whether you should bend or lift, the importance if diet, what to do if your back flares up -- give you a depth of invaluable information. These sessions make you the master again, no longer the passive victim, waiting to be struck down again.

Here are some recent testimonials from Sarah's 'Back-in-a-Week'
'Fernleigh' Scone NSW, (May, 2010)
"I am 79. My back has been a problem since childhood. I remember complaining about the pain as I practised the piano. Music has played an important part in my life and the viola my chosen instrument. Orchestral playing is hard work and physically demanding. Over the years my scoliosis became chronic. After many consultations and being told ' you are like a bent tree' I discovered Sarah Key's books and her 'Back-in-a-Week'. What a revelation this has been. The pain in my arms and upper back has all but disappeared. My lower back is almost free of pain and discomfort. A program of fitness has been personally designed for home. The most wonderful transformation is ' I can hold up my viola and enjoy playing again without pain'."
Marjorie, Sydney. May 2010
"We would like to take this opportunity to belatedly thank you all for such a wonderful 'Back-in-a-Week' at 'Fernleigh' in May. Apart from the wonderful food, company and luxury accommodation, what we learnt from Sarah and her team regarding our spinal health was invaluable. We cam e away feeling confident that; a) Ken did not need the suggested surgery; b) that we can heal and manage our own spinal injuries and degeneration with regular exercise and stretching; and c) that our preferred active and strenuous lifestyle can be fully restored."
Ken and Jennifer, Central Coast. May, 2010
'Fernleigh' Scone NSW, (September, 2008)
"Having had the privilege of editing two of Sarah Key’s books (Back in Action and The Back Sufferers’ Bible), I was reasonably well versed in her ground-breaking approach to treating backpain. As a patient, I attended ‘Back-in-a-Week’ in September at the Fernleigh Academy, Scone, NSW, which gave me even more insights into Sarah’s astonishing knowledge of the intricacies of the human spine and her treatment methods. Along with my fellow-sufferers we planted our feet firmly and resolutely on the path to recovery buoyed along in the most delightful way by Sarah and her team, who enthusiastically embarked on healing our bodies, minds and spirits.
Sarah is an intuitive healer, in all senses of the word, taking in all aspects of the person being treated – physical, postural and psychological. The mind-set looms large in back problems and is a crucial factor in recovery. Sarah works on it all. By the end of the week, all of us were feeling less pain and a certainty that by following Sarah’s exercise programs the future was now in our hands. Once Sarah mobilized our spinal segments we could then specifically target our problem areas and it would become a way of life. Eventually we wouldn’t even know we had a back!
After looking at our X-rays, MRIs, etc., and probing with her hands, Sarah gave us a thorough and individual diagnosis, and armed us with the knowledge of how to regain spinal health. It makes a huge difference when you can actually visualize what is going on in your back and you can almost feel the improvements happening when you do your self-treatment exercises. It all makes such sense, after years of getting nowhere.
On our final full day, Sarah drove us to the high tops of the property she and her husband Russel retreat to and we lunched at their ‘stone hut’. Afterwards we went for a bushwalk and one of our group suddenly stopped in her tracks and said: ‘I just realized that my back isn’t hurting!’
We all left the beautiful surroundings of Fernleigh feeling a sense of liberation from a week taken out of our ‘other’ lives – an informative and formative ‘Back-in-a-Week’."
Thank you all so much.

“Consistently you will hear the same thing from participants-“changed my life”, “at last, a diagnosis.. some hope, something positive I can do to get better,” “ wonderful environment, atmosphere, friendly, caring, supportive staff.” And they’re all true- especially the relief that people feel at finally finding an approach that works and validates their experiences of all those other ‘dead ends’. Even though there is no ‘ magic quick fix,’ all theses superlatives still only partially convey the power of their experience and the gentle sense of healing conveyed by Sarah Key.”
Ros, Tasmania , September, 2008
"I have a severe scoliosis and have been seeing conventional and alternative medical therapists since I was 14 years old. Four days after I met Sarah Key, I turned up at 'Back-in-a-Week'. Sarah convinced me that education would change my spine. Sarah was right! At 44 years old I am straightening my spine and reducing the rotation and muscular pain. I have been fighting surgery since 16 years old and was told 5 years ago I was not going to win, I will need surgery sooner or later.
I am now free not to see someone ( re: my back) every week. I have hope that I will never need surgery. I look and feel different. Through the information I learned in 'Back-in-a-Week', I now know when to and not to use pain relief and I can take care of myself. I can visualise what is happening and how to correct it. Thanks you Sarah and your beautiful team at 'Back-in-a-Week'. You changed my life!"
